Changing Your Car's Engine Oil

Your car is made up of thousands of parts that all work together to make you move. You may not be a car junkie, but if you drive you should know the basics. Outside of filling your tank and checking your tire pressure, oil change is the next most maintenance chore you do. Most of us let's the mechanic do the changing. However, if you want to save a buck or two, it's something that you can do yourself.
How do I start?

The first thing to do is to gather all the tools you will need.

  1. Container for old oil
  2. New oil filter
  3. 2 Wrenches (a specialized wrench for the oil filter is recommended and a box wrench for the drain plug)
  4. Funnel
  5. Car Jack, wheel ramp, secure stands (you will need to work under your car)
  6. New engine oil (check your manual for the best suited oil)

Once all your equipment is ready, warm your car up. Let the engine run around 10 minutes. This will make sludge move out of your car easier.

Remove the drain plug

To easily access the under part of your car, you will need to raise it. Ensure it is secure and the brakes are engaged before going under your car. Before doing this, learn how to best secure a raised car from your trusted car specialist. For safety, I recommend having someone with you in case of an emergency.

Use the box wrench to remove the drain plug and drain the oil into an oil pan or a container you prepared. The oil may be hot so be careful with this. Oil will start to spill once you are loosening the plug, so make sure the oil pan or container is already positioned. Check if you need to replace the gasket.  Draining takes around 10 minutes.

Replace the oil filter

Locate where your oil filter is attached. Use the specialized wrench to remove it.Oil may spill when removing this, so make sure you have the oil pan ready again. Once your car is completely drained, install the new oil filter. First, rub a little new engine oil on the seal before installing.  Tighten by hand only as the wrench might put too much pressure. Make sure the drain plug is returned as well before leaving your car's bottom.

Filling with the new oil

Open your car's hood and locate the oil cap. This is where you will pour the new engine oil. Use a funnel so you avoid spilling your engine oil. How much oil you use will depend on your car. Refer again to your car's manual for this. Let the oil sit for a few minutes and check the dipstick. If the amount of oil is right then you're all done.

Car maintenance protects your car and makes it longer lasting. However, the best protection you can ever get your is to get it insured. At Robert Nichols Insurance Group, we do our best in making sure that our clients are well-protected with affordable and comprehensive policies. Nice article. Vehicle needs regular maintenance to run smoothly. The oil change is one of such important aspect of regular maintenance. Engine oil degrades with the flow of time and should be replaced with suitable substitutes. Different types of filters used in the vehicle also needs to be inspected properly. Clogged filter could jeopardize the performance of the vehicle. So, such filters should be replaced with suitable substitutes.

Engine oil plays a vital role in the engine. It lubricates different moving parts of the engine. Along with this, it helps to cool the engine by absorbing the heat generated by the rubbing of different moving parts of the engine. But this degrades over time and degraded engine oil can't lubricate the moving engine parts properly. Therefore it is necessary to change the engine oil. We can do it on our own by following the steps mentioned by the author in the above blog or may take the help of a certified auto mechanic.

Nicely written blog post. In this blog author has mentioned the process of changing the engine oil in a car. Engine oil is an important fluid which helps to lubricate different moving parts of the engine. But as time passes it degrades due to the presence of contaminants in the engine. So engine oil needs to be replaced with suitable substitutes as degraded oil can't function as before. For oil change, we have to first remove the drain plug ,then replace the old oil filter & install the new filter and then fill oil.

Engine oil degenerated in time due to the generation of extreme heat energy due to internal combustion. Apart from this, deposition of debris in the engine oil has a significant impact on the lubrication ability of the engine oil. So, it is really essential to inspect the quality of the engine oil at a regular interval and replace it if necessary. You may prefer to visit:

Thanks for providing proper guidance to replace engine oil. The engine is the most expensive component of the car and appearance of mechanical errors in the engine could cost a lot to the owner. So, regular maintenance of the engine is really essential to keep the engine in good running order. The condition of different components of the vehicle should be inspected at a regular interval and damaged components should be repaired immediately. Lack of lubrication or use of burned lubricant could jeopardize the performance of the engine. So, regular inspection of the lubricant is really essential to ensure the smoother performance of the vehicle.

Thanks for helping me understand that draining the oil would take about ten minutes. I guess I should allot about 30 minutes or more when I take my car to an automotive shop for an oil change service for the first time. I plan to get it done this weekend, but I have a party to go to at around 6 p.m. onwards, so I should go to a shop earlier to ensure that I will not be late.

If you drive, it's important to know the basics about your car. This includes things like how to change a tire, how to check your oil level, and how to jump start your car. It's also important to know what to do if you get into an accident. Knowing these things can help you avoid costly repairs or even a trip to the emergency room.
