Owning a home can be fun until something unfortunate happens to your property. Making a claim on your home insurance can be a nightmare especially when it is denied. While most legitimate claims are settled, there are many that are rejected. Here are some helpful tips for receiving full compensation for your home insurance claims. Never assume that a “NO” is final.
About 10% of claims filed are unjustly denied, so if you have a legitimate claim, you should fight for it. Only less than 1% of the claimants challenge the decision of a denied claim. But over half of those who fight back only get the results; thus, giving you a good chance of winning if you challenge the decision. Review the Case Insist that your case is reviewed and ask for a written comprehensive explanation of the reasons for rejecting the claim. Check your Policy As soon as you have it in writing, check the reason for rejection of your policy. See whether anything doesn’t make sense. Then inquire about it in writing, and make sure to refer to the policy when needed. Doing so may lead to a reconsideration of your claim. Ask your Agent for Advice While they work with the company, it might do you good if you ask your agent for advice. They may be able to help and direct you to people for tips. Know your Rights Call the State Insurance Department that governs insurance in the US about your rights as a policyholder. Secure an Independent Adjuster Insurers use agents to represent them, so they don’t have to personally deal with you. Consider hiring an independent adjuster to represent you when filing a claim. Be cautious however when securing an agent because they may give you a “no win no fee” arrangement. Although attractive as it may seem, check how much the fee will be and who will way. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself paying an agent as big as that of your claim. Persistence is Key Call your insurer regularly – at least once every two weeks. Be persistent, but don’t forget to be polite. Log all calls with date and names of the people you’ve spoken with. Follow up each call with a letter of explanation for the conversation and a written response in 2 weeks. Don’t forget to keep copies of the letters you send, and send everything by mail with return receipt. Don’t just get any home insurance; make sure you understand its terms and conditions.
